About Ambassador Joseph Tomusange

Ambassador Tomusange was born on June 26th 1943 in Kigaba village, Kawoko Bukomansimbi District, Masaka, to the late Joseph and Angella Ssebuggwawo. 

 

He went to Kibanda Primary School, Masaka and St. Charles LwangaSSS, Kasasa. He joined St. Mary’s College, Kisubi for A Levels, where he excelled at football, and later the University of East Africa, Mulago to train as a microbiologist.  He received a scholarship from the British Council to continue the same course at St. Stephen’s Hospital (now Chelsea & Westminster Hospital). 

 

He excelled in his career and further education and became Deputy Senior Chief at Stephen’s Hospital. On 6 September 1975, he married Veneranda Mugerwa.  They raised two daughters, Angela and Zoe and a son Joseph (junior).

 

As well as being a devoted family man and Catholic, he was very well respected professionally. Before joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uganda, he worked as Personal Assistant to the former Uganda President, Prof. Yusuf Lule when he was based in the United Kingdom.

 

It was in recognition of his contribution to the struggle for freedom that President Museveni appointed him Uganda’s Ambassador to Canada, soon after the NRM captured power in 1986. 

 

His postings took him around the world, to Canada, Kenya, India, South Africa and Denmark where he oversaw six Nordic countries including Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland, as well as the Faroe Islands. By the time he retired, Ambassador Tomusange had dedicated over 25 years of his life serving his country as a diplomat.  His commitment to his family and country was exemplary.

Ambassador Tomusange, loved football and tennis as well as creating space for the community wherever he was. He was known for his infectious smile and his kind, warm and compassionate spirit.

 

Ambassador Tomusange was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Sseubggwawo and his mother, Angella(Nzela) Najjemba.  He is survived by his wife Veneranda, his three children, Angela, Zoe (John Nsibirwa), Joseph Junior; grandchildren, Jack, Christina, Catalina, Rosa, a number of stepsisters, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
